Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)

Established in 1972, the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) is a state-funded, non–need-based program that helps Virginia residents pay tuition at accredited private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the state, other than religious training or theological education. 1

Eligibility is determined by residency and enrollment status rather than financial need. Financial circumstances are not considered in determining eligibility.

Who is eligible for Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant?

  1. Be a Virginia resident and U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  2. Be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student.
  3. Be admitted in accredited private, nonprofit colleges and universities in Virginia pursuing an eligible degree that is not in religious training or theological education.
  4. Be compliant with federal Selective Service registration requirements.

How much is the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant?

The award amount is based on the number of eligible students and the availability of funds. Based on recent funding thresholds, the maximum award  for undergraduates per academic year is $5,250 and up to $2,625 per year for distance learning students.

For Hampton and Virginia Union Universities, the award amount is twice higher at $12,750 per academic year for undergradutes.

How do I apply for Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant?

To be considered for VTAG, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by July 31 each year but no later than December 1.

Applications submitted after September 15, but no later than December 1, will be considered for an award only if funds are available.
