Texas SNAP, commonly known as food stamps, helps needy families with cash assistance to buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet.

SNAP often serves as the first line of defense against hunger, providing crucial support to the elderly, the disabled, and the unemployed.

SNAP benefits are issued through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, known in Texas as “Lone Star Card”, that is accepted at most grocery stores.

Emergency SNAP Texas

Emergency SNAP, also known as expedited SNAP, is given to SNAP applicants in an emergency situation, such as:

  • A family in immediate need of food assistance
  • A family with resources worth $100 or less, and monthly income less than $150.
  • A family with resources and monthly income that are less than the most recent monthly expenses for rent/mortgage and utilities.

To apply for emergency food stamps in Texas, you can visit an HHSC benefits office or contact a community group that works with HHSC.

If you meet the eligibility requirements for expedited services, you may receive them as early as the day after you apply, or within 7 days from the application date.

Who is eligible for SNAP in Texas?

In order to qualify for SNAP, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Live in Texas
  2. Be a US Citizen or a lawful permanent resident
  3. Show proof of identity
  4. Meet certain income guidelines
  5. Have less than $5,000 in resources

As a condition of eligibility, all work-eligible applicants who aren’t exempt must be actively seeking for work, or participating in an employment and training program.

ABAWDs must comply with special work requirements or they will be subject to the three-month time limit.

Who qualifies for Texas food stamps?

Most families in Texas with gross income up to 165% of the federal poverty level, about $3,550 a month for a family of three, qualify for food assistance.

How long does it take to get approved for food stamps in Texas?

Generally, a state has a 30-day approval period before issuing food stamp benefits but may provide “expedited benefits” in as little as seven days to those who need emergency food or have a qualifying income.
