CalFresh

California has a statewide waiver of the ABAWD time-limit rule from February 1, 2025, through January 31, 2026. During this period, no SNAP recipient in California is required to meet ABAWD work requirements to keep their benefits.

CalFresh, California’s version of SNAP, is the largest food program in California that provides monthly benefits to low-income households to buy the food they need to maintain a nutritionally adequate diet.

The program issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy food at most grocery stores and many farmers markets throughout California.

In order to qualify for CalFresh, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Live in California
  2. Be a US Citizen or a lawful permanent resident
  3. Receive CalWORKs or General Relief
  4. Meet income limits and other financial eligibility rules

Everyone who gets CalFresh benefits are required to register for work and participate in CalFresh Employment and Training (E&T) program in order to maintain eligibility, unless otherwise exempt.

If you are a CalFresh recipient 18—64 years of age without a child, you must meet special work requirements or be subject to the three-month time limit.
