How do I apply for SNAP and what are the eligibility requirements?
Answered on November 6, 2026
You apply through the SNAP agency in the state where you live. SNAP is a federal program, but each state runs its own application. Most states let you apply online. You can also apply by phone, by mail, or in person at a local office.1
After you apply, the state agency sets up an interview, usually by phone. Bring proof of income, rent, and ID. The agency must decide within 30 days. If your household has very little money right now, you may qualify for faster service within 7 days.1
Eligibility comes down to income, resources, and how household members are counted. Most households must pass two income tests. Gross monthly income, before deductions, must sit at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line. Net monthly income, after deductions for things like housing and child care, must sit at or below 100 percent.2
For fiscal year 2027, which runs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, the limits in the 48 contiguous states and D.C. are $1,729 gross and $1,330 net a month for one person, and $3,575 gross and $2,750 net for a family of four.2 Your state may set a higher gross limit, since many states use broad-based categorical eligibility. Check with your state agency before assuming you earn too much.
Resources count too. Countable resources, like money in bank accounts, must stay under $3,000 in most cases, or $4,750 if someone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability. Your home and most retirement accounts do not count.2 If you are not sure where you stand, apply anyway. The state agency makes the final call.
