Can I get SNAP benefits if I am unemployed?
Answered on November 1, 2026
Yes, being unemployed does not disqualify you from SNAP. The Food and Nutrition Service lists unemployed people among those who may be able to get benefits, as long as the household meets the income and other eligibility rules.1
If you receive unemployment compensation, report it on your application. SNAP counts almost all income, and unemployment payments count toward your household income. Higher unemployment payments can mean a smaller SNAP benefit, or no benefit if total income passes the limit.1
You may also need to meet SNAP work rules. Adults who are able to work generally must register for work and accept suitable work if offered. Meeting the work requirements of unemployment compensation can excuse you from the general SNAP work requirements.2 Adults without dependents may face an added time limit if they are not working or in a work program, so ask your state agency which rules apply to you.2
Apply through your state SNAP agency even if you are unsure. They review your full household situation and tell you whether you qualify.
