What happens to my SNAP benefits if I move to another state?

Answered on November 3, 2026

Your SNAP case does not move with you. SNAP is run state by state, and you must apply in the state where you currently live, so a move means closing your old case and opening a new one.1

Tell your old state agency you are moving and ask them to close your case. Then apply in your new state as soon as you arrive, since your new state will run its own eligibility check, including its own income limits and rules. You cannot receive SNAP in two states at the same time, so do not let the cases overlap.

Your old balance does not vanish on moving day. Federal law defines EBT interoperability as a system that lets benefits on an EBT card be redeemed in any state, so you can keep spending the balance already on your card at authorized stores in your new state until it runs out.2

Apply through your new state’s SNAP agency even if you are unsure about the new rules. They review your household situation and tell you whether you qualify and how much you will get.
