What if I no longer need food stamps and want to cancel?
Answered on November 1, 2026
You can cancel your SNAP benefits at any time. Food stamps are voluntary, and there is no penalty for closing your case when you no longer need it.
Contact your state agency to close it. That usually means calling your caseworker, using your state benefits portal, or sending a written request. Do not just stop using the card and ignore the mail. An open case with unreported income changes can turn into an overpayment claim later, so reporting the change when you cancel protects you.
Any balance left on your card usually stays usable after the case closes, but it does not last forever. Under federal rules, unused benefits are removed after nine months.1 Closing the case does not count against you later. If life changes again, you can reapply like any new applicant.2
