Published on November 4, 2026

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reinstated Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) work requirements on November 1, 2026, in Alger, Arenac, Iosco, Iron, Luce, Montmorency, Oceana and Roscommon counties and the city of Bay City. MDHHS was notified of the change by the United States Department of Agriculture on October 30.1

The requirements apply to able-bodied adults ages 18 to 64 without dependents under age 14. These adults may receive benefits for up to three months within a 36-month period unless they meet the work requirements.

The requirements continue to apply statewide except in Alcona, Cheboygan, Mackinac, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Presque Isle and Schoolcraft counties and the cities of Detroit, Eastpointe, Flint, Jackson and Saginaw, where a federal waiver continues.

A participant may meet the requirements by working at least 80 hours a month, by participating at least 80 hours a month in an approved employment and training program, or by volunteering at a nonprofit organization.2
