Medicaid Work Requirements Begin Jan 1

Published on October 25, 2026

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported that federally mandated work requirements for the Healthy Michigan Plan begin on Friday, January 1. A new tool, the Michigan Work and Exemptions Screening Tool, is available to help identify whether an individual may qualify for an exemption. 1

These requirements apply to Healthy Michigan Plan members between the ages of 19 and 64. Examples of individuals who may be exempt include parents of a child age 13 or under, pregnant individuals, and veterans with a total disability rating. Individuals who are not exempt may meet requirements through working, volunteering, or schooling. A household may meet requirements by earning at least 580 dollars or completing 80 hours of approved activities in one month between renewals.

Applicants subject to work requirements must meet them by the month they apply. Current beneficiaries will have requirements reviewed at renewals starting March 1. The department encourages individuals to keep their MI Bridges account up to date and to respond promptly to requests for information.
