LIHEAP heating assistance opens Nov. 2 as oil prices hit record

Published on October 30, 2026

Heating oil prices have reached an all-time high, rising more than 85% from the same period last year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The agency reports the average cost of a gallon of heating oil in late October 2026 is $6.05 compared to $3.24 in mid-October 2025. The Standard-Speaker reported the figures. 1

Help is available through the federally funded Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The application window opens Nov. 2 and runs until May 8. The program offers a one-time cash grant of $200 to $1,000. The grant does not have to be repaid, and the amount is based on household size, income and fuel type. Crisis grants are also offered through application for emergency relief for urgent situations such as a broken main heating source or a looming service shut-off.

Applicants may call the LIHEAP Hotline at 1-866-857-7095 or apply online through the state COMPASS Benefits site at www.compass.dhs.pa.gov .
