Was awarded $3,696 for the fall semester and have only received $1,300. When is the rest paid?

The missing money is usually not lost. It either went to your school bill or it is scheduled for a second disbursement later in the term.

Aid pays the school first. Tuition, fees, and other authorized charges come out before you see anything, and what is left is refunded to you. If your charges were around $2,396, then $1,300 is the remainder and there is nothing more coming from this award. 1

The other common reason is a split disbursement. Federal Direct Loans that cover only one semester are generally paid in two installments, with the second at the calendar midpoint of the semester. First year, first time borrowers also wait 30 days after the term starts before the first loan payment is released. Both rules have exceptions for schools with low default rates. 2

To find out which one it is, check your student account portal for three numbers: charges, aid applied, and refund paid. If it is still unclear, ask the financial aid office whether a second disbursement is scheduled or a hold is on your account. Once a credit balance exists, the school must send the refund within 14 days. 1
