LIHEAP Michigan

LIHEAP is federal money given to each state to assist low-income families with energy costs. In Michigan, the LIHEAP grant is used for the following programs: 2

State Emergency Relief (SER) #

State Emergency Relief is a crisis intervention program that provides emergency assistance to income-eligible households who are in immediate danger of being without heat.

The program is available all year long via MI Bridges. Eligibility is based on the number of individuals in your household, your monthly income and your countable cash assets.

Home Heating Credit #

Home Heating Credit is a state credit available to eligible homeowners or renters to help pay for winter heating bills. The Michigan Department of Treasury determines eligibility and makes the payments.

To apply for a credit, eFile your claim at MIfastfile.org before September 30 deadline or by calling the Michigan Department of Treasury at 517-636-4486.

Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) #

Michigan’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides free home energy conservation services to low-income Michigan homeowners and renters.

WAP services typically include:

  • Wall Insulation.
  • Attic Insulation and Ventilation.
  • Foundation Insulation.
  • Air Leakage Reduction.
  • Smoke Detectors.
  • Dryer Venting.

Contact your local Weatherization Operator to get started. Eligibility is based on household income being at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
